Es un tópico -y no generalmente cierto- que el libro siempre es mejor que la película, afirmación que por otra parte refleja cierta pedantería. Pero lo cierto es que cuando aparece una enorme distancia entre la calidad de uno y otro la irritación suele ser profunda, por lo que se impone hacer una lista de las peores adaptaciones al cine de un libro.

El presente ránking tiene que ver más con la decepción y el destrozo que con las ganas de denunciar. Y, también, con el ánimo de invitar a la lectura del original para poder exorcizar posibles fantasmas y ajustar cuentas culturales.

1. «El gran Gatsby», de Baz Luhrmann. Una de las peores adaptaciones al cine de una de las mejores novelas de siempre

El Gran Gatsby es una obra maestra de la literatura y una de las peores adaptaciones al cine

Hay que ser muy bruto para cargarse una novela así y luego hay que ser Baz Luhrmann. Tan moderno él, decide hacer un videoclip infumable para demostrar que nunca comprendió, o acaso no leyó, la obra maestra de Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

La insípida película de Jack Clayton de 1974 es a su lado una obra maestra. Y tiene mérito en una historia ambientada en la «era del jazz» no pinchar un solo tema de este estilo. Qué pena da ver ahí a Leonardo DiCaprio y Carey Mulligan tan desaprovechados. Aquí no hay ni una brizna de romanticismo ni un atisbo de talento. No solo una de las peores adaptaciones al cine, sino una de las peores y más irritantes películas de la historia.

2. «La letra escarlata», de Roland Joffe. Lo que no debe hacerse en una adaptación

La letra escarlata es la obra cumbre de Nathaniel Hawthorne y una de las cimas de la literatura estadounidense. Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) es una esposa cuyo marido está en el mar y tiene una aventura con el reverendo local Arthur Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman), con lo que el pueblo pide castigo para los dos en nombre de Dios.

Pero el castigo es para nosotros. Roland Joffe cree que la trama no está bien contada y se recrea en otras cosas que al final solo le acaban interesando a él, pues ni crítica ni público le respaldaron. El final feliz es el tétrico broche de oro para una de las peores adaptaciones al cine jamás vistas.

3. «Dune», de David Lynch. Un dislate quizá involuntario, pero un dislate

En justicia hay que decir que probablemente no fue lo que David Lynch tenía en mente, pero lo cierto es que le quedó una perlícula muy lejos de la obra maestra que es «Dune», incluida en este blog dentro de los 10 mejores libros de ciencia ficción de la historia.

El director redujo a cinco lo que en un principio eran ocho horas de metraje y la productora lo dejó en poco más de dos horas. El resultado: aquello era imposible de digerir.

4. «Shutter Island», de Martin Scorsese. O cómo el genio tuvo un mal día y realizó una de las peores adaptaciones al cine

Las expectativas eran máximas: una de las varias obras maestras de Dennis Lehane (impresionantes son también «Cualquier otro día» o «Desapareció una noche») con Martin Scorsese tras la cámara. Y el fiasco fue absoluto.

No solo no hay ni rastro de la tensión y el drama del original, sino lo más grave: el espectador no tarda en saber lo que está ocurriendo. Y claro, la película se hace pesadísima hasta cargarse una de las novelas más importantes del presente siglo. Si no ha visto la película, hoy es su día de suerte: ¡lea el original!

5. «El sonido del trueno», de Peter Hyams. El frío arte de destrozar por destrozar

Que el melifluo Peter Hyams se pusiera detrás de un cuento de Ray Bradbury no hacía presagiar nada bueno. Que el protagonista fuera Edward Burns, mucho menos. Y todas las sospechas se fueron confirmando una por una hasta aparecer hundido en lo más profundo de la butaca al llegar al final.

La película es una sucesión de tópicos que solo encuentra parangón cuando se ven unos efectos especiales que apestan a maqueta rancia. El anticlimax de la parte final completa un cuadro doloroso que pide a gritos masajista al incorporarse. Es duro enfrentarse a una de las peores adaptaciones al cine.

6. «La Dalia Negra», de Brian De Palma. O cómo convertir un relato bien construido en algo incomprensible

La dalia negra, una de las peores adaptaciones al cine de una gran novela negra

Probablemente sea la mejor novela del prolífico e irregular James Elroy. Es una historia sensacional construida con pulso de cirujano, personajes carismáticos y una atmósfera casi claustrofóbica. La tensión se palpa. Y nada de eso entendió Brian De Palma.

Una vez fue un gran director, pero ya no no. Aquí le dan un caramelo y lo convierte en una bola de alquitrán. De tal forma que todo apesta a caricatura. Y ni rastro de la excelencia del original.

7. «La Guía del Autoestopista Galáctico», de Garth Jennings. Una comedia que da pena, una de las adaptaciones al cine más tristes

«La Guía del Autoestopista Galáctico», de Douglas Adams, es uno de los mejores libros de comedia y ciencia ficción jamás escritos, por lo que la película del mismo nombre prometía, pero es infumable.

Es cierto que la adaptación no era sencilla, pero aquí parece que todo el esfuerzo se centró en la estética, y no en lo que verdaderamente importaba. Lo peor de todo es que los chistes del libro simplemente no se contaron bien ni con gracia. Todo conduce así a una melancolía infinita. Otra de las peores adaptaciones al cine jamás vistas.

8. «El resplandor», de Stanley Kubrick. Terrorífica en aspectos no deseados

La película tenía todo lo necesario para ser una obra maestra: un relato inquietante de Stephen King, un genio en la dirección y Jack Nicholson como protagonista. Y el resultado es de lo más decepcionante.

No es que el filme sea malo, que tampoco lo es, sino que es la sensación de desperdicio del material original y lo descontrolado que por momentos (demasiados en realidad) está Nicholson. El colofón es verla con el doblaje al español. Eso sí que da miedo.

9. «El cazador de sueños», de Lawrence Kasdan. Otro gran proyecto, otro gran director, otra de las peores adaptaciones al cine

Lawrence Kasdan era garantía de eficiencia… hasta esta película. Otra adaptación de Stephen King que se va a la basura por una desganada puesta en escena. No es que todo sea previsible, sino que por momentos al espectador le invade una pavorosa sensación: ¿se están riendo de mí?

Hasta el habitualmente solvente Martin Freeman roza el ridículo en algunos momentos (atención a sus cejas). Kasdan calificaría la película como «el error más grave» de su carrera y tardaría nueve años en volver a dirigir.

10. «El asesino dentro de mí», de Michael Winterbottom. El aburrimiento dentro de mí

Increíble: cómo convertir una de las novelas más tensas jamás escritas en un thriller casi anodino. Pues eso lo consiguió el buen director que en realidad es Michael Winterbottom en la adaptación de «El asesino dentro del mí», la obra maestra de Jim Thompson, ya destacada en la lista de mejores novelas negras en este blog.

Casey Affleck está tan bien como siempre, y tanto Jessica Alba como Kate Hudson tan mal como casi siempre. Pero lo peor es que Winterbottom no acierta con lo básico: la tensión. Y eso es imperdonable con el material que tenía delante.
