3. John Mayall: «Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton» (1966). Un chico de 20 años capaz de hacer el mejor blues
John Mayall, el padre del blues británico junto a Alexis Korner, siempre tuvo un tremendo ojo para elegir músicos y en 1965 se fijó en un tal Eric Clapton, a quien ya llamaban «Dios» por sus conciertos con los Yardbirds. Se colgó una Gibson Les Paul sobre su espalda y dio un recital… con solo 20 años.
Grabado prácticamente en directo, cada riff y cada lick de Clapton es de escuela. Cómo suena su guitarra. Mayall toca la armónica y canta como los ángeles, por supuesto, pero lo que es imborrable es lo que hizo Clapton en temas como «All your love», «Hide Away», «Have you heard» o «Steppin’ out». El mejor blues posible a cargo de un chaval.
4. Muddy Waters: «At Newport» (1960). Una leyenda, una voz inolvidable y uno de los mejores discos de blues
Esto era Muddy Waters, Newport y el blues. Aquí está su guitarra, su banda, su voz y la armónica de James Cotton para dejar estupefacto a los jóvenes blancos que se rompen las manos de aplaudir a esta leyenda, no reconocida en su era. Otra de esas actuaciones que el tiempo reivindicaría como más trascendentes de la historia.
Qué decir de su fraseo y su autoridad en canciones como «I got my brand on you», «Hoochie Coochie Man», «Baby please don’t go» o «Got my mojo working». Muddy Waters nunca recibió en vida el honor que mereció.
5. Albert King: «Born under a bad sign» (1967). El inicio del blues contemporáneo
Albert King ya apareció en nuestra lista con los mejores guitarristas y aquí vuelve. Su pegada nunca pasó inadvertida y suya es esta obra maestra de 1967, un disco que contribuyó a definir las reglas del blues contemporáneo, tan agarrado al nervio, los riffs bien definidos, los arreglos de viento y los desarrollos instrumentales.
Lo que ocurre es que en este trabajo está él respaldado por Booker T. & MG’s y los Memphis Horns. Casi nada al aparato. Por eso suena así este álbum, terrorífico de principio a fin. Uno de los grandes hitos del género para otro de los mejores discos de blues de siempre. Pinchas el álbum y el tocadiscos comienza a sudar.
6. Billie Holiday: «Lady in satin» (1958). La gran dama del blues, ante su tragedia final
Fue el penúltimo disco grabado por Billie Holiday, una mujer que supo expresar como nadie el dolor del blues porque siempre lo vivió en primera persona. Por sus adicciones a los peores hombres y a las sustancias más tóxicas. Cuentan que lloró durante toda la interpretación de «I’m a fool to want you».
Criticaron en su día la orquestación y los efectos devastadores de la mala vida en la voz de la gran dama del blues. No es la perfección de antaño, pero a cambio se obtiene una dureza y una expresividad fuera de lo común. No obstante, de Billie Holiday hay que tenerlo todo.
7. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble: «Texas Flood» (1983). La última leyenda entre los guitarristas de blues
Cuando Stevie Ray Vaughan publicó este álbum, su debut, se convirtió en un mito de inmediato. Era como si Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Link Wray y Albert King se hubieran reunido en una misma persona. Pero con un añadido: sabía sonar a él mismo.
«Texas Flood» es una barbaridad desde principio a fin. Desde el sudoroso «Love Struck Baby» hasta el bellísimo «Lenny» con el que se cierra el álbum. Otro de esos discos en los que cada tema es una cumbre del género, otro de esos artistas imprescindibles en el desarrollo de la música popular.
8. John Lee Hooker: «I’m John Lee Hooker» (1959). El «groove» del blues
Cómo obviar la presencia de John Lee Hooker en cualquier referencia al blues. No solo es su voz cavernosa, sino ese envolvente «groove» con el que embadurnaba cada interpretación.
Este disco de finales de los 50 ofrece una extraordinaria muestra de lo que era este maestro, cuán espectacular era su sentido del ritmo, cómo se complementaban voz y guitarra, quizá como no se había escuchado desde los tiempos de Robert Johnson. Lo que queda hoy es magisterio tras magisterio, como ese tremendo «Hobo Blues».
9. Fleetwood Mac: «Live in Boston» (1970). El blues, según Peter Green y su compañía
Pocos guitarristas hubo más elegantes y imaginativos que Peter Green. Su carrera con Fleetwood Mac fue impresionante y alcanzó su máxima cota en los conciertos de 1970 en Boston. Tres CDs dan testimonio.
Aquí Green y su extraordinaria banda ofrecen un salto adelante para contribuir decisivamente al desarrollo del subgénero del blues-rock, el germen de un sonido que adquiriría total notoriedad con Derek & The Dominos o Allman Brothers Band, entre otros. Hay que rendirse ante piezas como «Oh Well», «World in harmony», «Black Magic Woman», «Jumping at shadows», «Got to move» o ese «Encore Jam» al que se unen Eric Clapton y Joe Walsh.
10. Freddy King: «Freddy King Sings» (1961). La electricidad del blues
Fue a comienzo de los 60 cuando se editaría un álbum que causaría furor principalmente entre los jóvenes británicos. Y particularmente entre aquellos que desarrollarían posteriormente una carrera musical, tipo Clapton, Green, Jeff Beck o Jimmy Page.
