Michael Wadleight se propuso filmar un reportaje sobre el legendario festival de 1969, pero consiguió algo más: ofrecer un cuadro social (y musical) de lo que por entonces ya era la decadencia de la contracultura y los valores de una década.

4. «Stop Making Sense», de Jonathan Demme (1984). Talking Heads como testigo de una época cambiante
Talking Heads fueron una de las figuras principales de la música de los 80, uno de sus agitadores fundamentales y protagonista indiscutible de la influyente «new-wave«. Y Jonathan Demme lo contó como nadie.
El cineasta registró tres conciertos de la banda, pero fue mucho más allá. Su forma de filmar y contar los shows significaron un antes y un después en la historia del género. Demostró que se puede contar una historia si se tiene una visión propia, si el director adopta una posición subjetiva y participativa. De todas formas, no basta con señalar que es uno de los mejores documentales de música de la historia. En realidad, es mejor verlo que contarlo…
5. «Gimmer Shelter», de Albert Maysles, David Maysles y Charlotte Zwerin (1970). La brutalidad de los Rolling Stones
Este documental sería célebre sobre todo por captar el sanguinario y demente concierto de Altamont en 1969. Pero realmente hay mucho más: es la exposición de toda la locura que se expande cuando unos héroes (manipuladores por demás) se apoderan la mente de unos miles de desquiciados.
En aquellos tiempos, los Rolling Stones eran la mejor banda del planeta, con una música extraordinaria y, también, con un perverso sentido de la moralidad que regaba vidas propias y ajenas de violencia y muerte. Todo esto aparece reflejado en este impresionante documental que refleja lo poderosas que eran entonces las estrellas de la música y su influencia sobre los seres más adoctrinables. 6. «All or nothing at all», de Alex Gibney (2015). Uno de los mejores documentales de música que se ve como una película sobre Frank Sinatra
La vida y obra del gigantesco Frank Sinatra merecía exactamente esto: un documental de cuatro horas, dividido en dos partes, que HBO encargó a Alex Gibney y lo bordó. Todo lo que fue Sinatra está aquí: genio, amante, golfo, comediante, afectivo, vengativo, caprichoso, generoso, mafioso…

Dos fans de un cantante maldito tratan de averiguar cuál fue el paradero de un hombre, Sixto Rodríguez, que fracasó comercialmente en Estados Unidos y que en cambio arrasó en Sudáfrica… sin que él lo supiera. Dan con el artista y descubren que siguió trabajando en la construcción sin conocer nada de su éxito ni, por supuesto, ver dinero alguno.
Es una muestra de cómo contar la mejor de las historias, aquella en la que la realidad supera en mucho a la ficción. Hay imágenes de archivo, el desarrollo de la búsqueda, el hallazgo del personaje y la gran traca final. Todo es emocionante en una película ya clásica entre los mejores documentales de música.
8. «Let’s get lost», de Bruce Weber (1988). Vida y miserias de Chet Baker
Cualquier cosa le valía a Chet Baker con tan de conseguir algo de dinero fresco para alimentar su titánica adicción a la heroína. Incluido prestarse a un documental para exponer su vida y miserias.
